Felting has become increasingly popular in recent years usually focusing on wool fibre. A marriage of silk with other fibers wherein the fibers bind together is known as “nuno felting” (In Japanese “nuno” literally means new fabric which was a term coined in Australia to name this process). I now use often the technique in my scarf and jacket designs. Participants have responded very enthusiastically.

This fairly simple technique uses alpaca roving (my choice of fibre due to its softness, ability to be easily felted and hypoallergenic properties), soapy water, pressure and of course the painted silk scarf. Students will complete a scarf of either chiffon or paj silk as part of the class.

I provide supplies including dyed and natural alpaca roving, silk for practice, and other supplies for the felting process for $15.

Participants may either bring their own scarves already painted, steamed and washed mm (mummy weight) 3-8 thick) or purchase one from me to use ($15 each). Scarves will shrink by approximately 1/3 so I suggest bring scarves of at least 12 x 72 inches. Students must have enough physical strength to either apply pressure with their feet or hands in a rolling motion for several minutes at at time.
